Allyship is a collective effort, yet also a very personal journey that can throw in some uncomfortable moments. I have always believed in the collective power of LGBT+ allyship – that all of us, not just the LGBT+ community, can play a role in bringing about meaningful change and root out discrimination and systemic bias.

That, more than anything, is what motivates me to be an ally – to LGBT+ people or other under-represented minorities – and to help people understand the importance of fully inclusive environments, within or outside Deloitte. But I have also seen people being out, proud and thriving at work, confident in being who they are and aiming high.

How keeping something so important from others impedes both their professional growth and their personal well-being. I have seen the trauma that someone goes through when they feel they cannot be themselves at work. And this is what being an ally is about.Īllyship has been an eye-opener. I can use my voice and make a difference through my day-to-day actions. I have learned that, while I can’t experience the world through their eyes, I can take the time to listen, understand and stand in unity. I have learned so much by working with Em and many other LGBT+ colleagues over the years. Learning about the experiences of others has not only opened my mind, it has also taught me things about my own identity.Īllyship is truly a journey of personal learning and growth, but it is also a powerful driver of broader change. Engaging with people who may appear to have a lot in common with me but who may have very different challenges and perceptions than I do, has allowed me to grow personally and consciously address my own bias. The LGBT+ community is incredibly diverse. Being an ally is a deep, personal commitment, and one which has allowed me to become a more empathetic and better person. We all have a responsibility to call out bias and prejudice if we see it, and we have the ability to promote and uphold the fundamental rights and well-being of others. Unfortunately, many LGBT+ people lack role models and don’t feel able to be their true selves at work.
